Introduction
Do you want a quick tutorial showing you how to convert video to audio on your iPhone? You’ve come to the right spot! Transforming your video to audio on your iPhone is extremely easy and straight forward. Here’s your guide to unleashing the audio potential of your video files without needing any third-party apps.
What You Need to Know
- You can create a shortcut to easily extract audio from a video.
- This feature is useful if you want to repurpose the audio for a podcast, ringtone, or other project.
Why Use Shortcuts?
Apple’s powerful automation tool, called Shortcuts, simplifies complex tasks. For extracting audio, it lets you create a multi-step automation that does all the heavy work for you.
Install the Shortcuts App
First thing we need to do is make sure the Shortcuts app is installed on your iPhone. It should be there with the default install, but many people delete it if they’re not using it. To reinstall the app, simply open the App Store and search for Shortcuts. Download and install and we can move on to the next steps.
Setting Up Your Shortcut
The Shortcuts app is very powerful! You can create your own shortcuts and automations to increase your productivity. Apple has also created a gallery of preinstalled shortcuts that you can enable.
Create a New Shortcut
Now we need to create a new shortcut. Once the Shortcuts App is installed, open the app. Now press the “+” icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen to create a new shortcut.
Rename the Shortcut
Let’s rename the shortcut so that it makes sense and it’s easy to find. Tap the name at the top and select “Rename” from the menu that appears. As you create and use more shortcuts, you won’t be able to find your shortcuts if the name does not accurately describe what the shortcut does. In this case let’s rename the shortcut “Convert Video to Audio”. Then click Done.
Enable Show in Share Sheet
Our next step is to enable “Show in Share Sheet”. The Share Sheet is an odd name, but it is the iPhone feature that allows you to see your shortcuts and other actions inside apps when you tap the share icon.
To enable Share Sheet, tap the “i” at the bottom of the screen and toggle on Show in Share Sheet. Then tap Done.
Configure Shortcut
We can now configure our shortcut. First tap the “Images and 18 others” in the configuration. On the next screen tap Clear to deselect all the options. Then Turn on Media. Tap Done.
This step makes sure that the shortcut only applies to Videos and not all the other shortcut options. It wouldn’t make sense to try to extract audio from a picture or URL for instance.
Now we want to tap Add Action and search for Encode. Tape Encode Media and tap Done. Tap the carrot symbol next to Encode Media and enable Audio Only. You can also choose the audio format you would like depending on the quality or format you need. Once you have done that tap the carrot again to close it.
At the bottom of the screen search for Save File. Tap Save Files. This will tell the shortcut to save the file to your iPhone. We will be prompted where we would like to save the file when the shortcut runs.
We have completed the steps to configure the shortcut. So tap done and we can test the shortcut.
Using Your Shortcut
Now, open any video that you want to extract audio from. Once the video is open, tap the Share icon at the bottom of the screen. This is called the Share Sheet which we discussed earlier. Scroll down and tap the Convert Video to Audio shortcut we created.
The audio conversion is prepared and then we are asked where we would like to save the file. The default location is the file system on your iPhone.
Once the file is saved, you can open the Files App. Make sure that you are browsing the correct location. There are options to view in iCloud, on your iPhone, etc. We tap the local iPhone files option and then we will see the audio file!
Troubleshooting
If your shortcut doesn’t appear in the Share Sheet, there are a few troubleshooting steps we recommend.
- Check the Shortcut settings – especially the “Show in Share Sheet” option.
- Try restarting your iPhone.
- Ensure the video format is compatible with your iPhone and convert if necessary.
Conclusion
This simple shortcut extends your iPhone’s capabilities, proving that you don’t need to be an expert to manage videos like a pro! Whether you’re creating ringtones, exporting audio for a podcast, saving presentations, or sampling music, extracting audio has never been easier.
